THE COLL I REGÀS HOUSE
Modernism is the European cultural current that marks the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. It reaches all the arts and, at the same time, it also represents a way of life. The modernism in Mataró has the name of the architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch, protagonist of the main modernist architectural actions to the city.
It is possible that, for all this, Joaquim Coll i Regàs, textile entrepreneur, will commission the project of his house, today converted into a symbol of the city.
In 1896 he bought two houses in the Argentona Street and immediately built his own new plant according to the project written by the architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch, which was completed in 1898. The planning followed the tradition of the houses of the bourgeoisie urban area of Mataró, and in this sense it is the only house built in the city in modernist times.
